Lower Primary (Years K – 3)
Winner: $300 and trophy
Runner-up: $150 and trophy 

Upper Primary (Years 4 – 6, Inc. Year 7 in QLD, WA, SA)
Winner: $400 and trophy
Runner-up: $200 and trophy

Learning Assistance and Special Education Primary 
Winner: $400 and trophy
Runner-up: $200 and trophy 
Entries to be submitted by the teacher, only students on IEP or STLA programs are eligible to enter.

Junior Secondary (Years 7 – 9)
Winner: $500 and trophy
Runner-up: $300 and trophy

Senior Secondary (Years 10 – 12)
Winner: $500 and trophy
Runner-up: $300 and trophy

Learning Assistance and Special Education Secondary 
Winner: $500 and trophy
Runner-up: $300 and trophy

Community Relations Commission (NSW) Award
Winner:   $350 and trophy (separate presentation arrangements)
For the best poem highlighting the value of cultural diversity within Australian community:

  • Celebrating the cultural and linquistic diversity of Australia;
  • Canvassing issues arising from the Australain migration and settlement experience;
  • Treating issues in one or more cultural settings

Schools’ Award
For schools whose entries demonstrate a high overall standard.
Winner: $1000 and trophy
Runner-up: $700 and trophy  


A National Presentation Ceremony will be held in Gunnedah, north-west NSW on Friday 3 September 2010.

Travel and accommodation (from the nearest capital city) to attend the presentation is included for the individual category winners and one accompanying adult.

A representative from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations will present other category runners-up with their prizes at a school assembly.

Each of the winners and runners-up will also receive a selection of books as part of their prize.   Our thanks to University of Queensland Press, Hachette Children's Books, Little Hare Books, Fremantle Press, as well as RM Williams for their gift vouchers and Horizon Communications/Franklin for their electronic dictionaries for 2009 prizes.

All winners and runners up will receive a unique handcrafted trophy, designed and created by a talented local artist and craftsperson.

All students entering the competition will receive a Participation Certificate.
