Poetry Workshops in Schools

Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards Project Officer Ruth Macaulay has been busy writing and conducting Poetry Writing Workshops in schools around Gunnedah.

The workshops are aimed at engaging kids with poetry and literature through word games, movement games and writing prompts. They are a great opportunity to get students thinking about and writing their entries leading up to the 2017 Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards.

"The most important thing is that the kids are having fun," says Ruth. "Writing poetry doesn't have to be boring or hard. That's the main thing I want students and teachers to take away from these workshops. Poetry can be silly, sad, exciting, creative, it can be whatever you want it to be."

Students from grades K-10 can participate in these workshops. They run for about half an hour for younger students and an hour for older students. If your school is in or around the Gunnedah/Tamworth area and is interested in participating, get in touch with our Project Officer on (02)67421200 or send an email to dorotheamackellar[at]gmail[dot]com

Don't forget, the 2017 Poetry Awards close on June 30, so get those entries coming in!
